Conceptualized in 2012 by Amy Leibrand (@_thisspace_), EXPOSURE Mobile Photo came to fruition in early 2013 with the help of Daniel Colvin of CS Gallery in Columbus, Ohio. One of three galleries that Amy approached about hosting a mobile photography exhibition, it was CS Gallery that agreed with her mission, to demonstrate that mobile photography can and should be considered an art. The first exhibit in March 2013 was a resounding success despite a power outage during the opening reception that fittingly left patrons to view the artworks by the light of their smartphones. The success of the 2013 exhibit led to a second in 2014 where more than 400 patrons attended the opening reception, the first hour of which was dedicated the “Blackout Hour” with lights dimmed in celebration of the previous year.
The recurring exhibit featured the work of 60 new and acclaimed artists — split evenly between Ohio and international artists — whose diverse views and voices were expressed through mobile devices. Through the hundreds of images hung on the gallery’s walls, EXPOSURE illustrated the limitless possibilities of mobile art, shattered preconceived notions about the genre and demonstrated that a desire to push boundaries can spark a global movement to redefine photography.
